Trailer, Tools & Equipment Insurance in Tampa, FL: Coverage for What Your Trucks Haul

Start here

Trailer insurance in Tampa is where two assumptions go wrong at once. The first is that the policy on the truck covers the trailer completely. The second is that the tools and equipment riding on that trailer are covered because the trailer is. Neither is true, and the gap between them shows up every week at Tampa Bay job sites when a trailer disappears overnight.

Here is the actual division. Liability generally follows the tow vehicle, so if your truck's trailer causes damage while in tow, the truck's liability coverage responds. Physical damage does not follow. A trailer has to be scheduled on the policy to be repaired or replaced, and the mower, skid steer, compressor or pressure washer strapped to it needs inland marine coverage of its own.

Commercial Auto Insurance Tampa quotes the truck, the trailer and the equipment as one package so nothing falls between the policies. That is the same conversation whether you run one dump trailer in Brandon or a dozen enclosed trailers across Pinellas County.

Send a list of trailers with values, plus your equipment list, and we will show you what it costs to cover all three layers.

Trailer, Tools and Equipment Coverage in Tampa: The Three Layers

Each layer answers a different question, and each is elected separately.

Layer One: Liability While Towing

Your commercial auto liability generally extends to a trailer in tow, covering injuries and property damage arising from its use. What matters here is weight. If the combination rating passes 10,001 pounds, a vehicle used in interstate commerce becomes a commercial motor vehicle under federal safety rules (49 C.F.R. § 390.5T), and Florida's own definition picks up any vehicle with three or more axles regardless of weight, plus combinations over 26,001 pounds (s. 320.01(25), Fla. Stat.).

Cross those thresholds and the weight-based liability minimums in s. 627.7415, Fla. Stat. apply: $50,000 combined at 26,000 to 34,999 pounds, $100,000 at 35,000 to 43,999, and $300,000 at 44,000 and above. A tandem-axle equipment trailer behind a one-ton can get there faster than owners expect.

Layer Two: Physical Damage on the Trailer

Trailers are scheduled like vehicles, with their own values and deductibles. Enclosed trailers, dump trailers, gooseneck equipment trailers, utility trailers and tag trailers are all insurable, and an unscheduled trailer is an uninsured trailer even when the truck pulling it carries full coverage.

Theft is the driving exposure. Trailers left at job sites, behind shops and in unfenced yards across Tampa Bay are stolen regularly, and comprehensive coverage on the scheduled trailer is what replaces them.

Layer Three: Tools and Equipment (Inland Marine)

Contractors equipment coverage, often called an equipment floater or inland marine, covers what the trailer carries: mowers, skid steers, mini excavators, compressors, generators, jetters, ladders, pressure washers and hand tools. It follows the equipment wherever it goes rather than being tied to one vehicle or location.

Two details decide whether a claim works. Higher-value items are usually scheduled individually with serial numbers, while smaller tools sit under a blanket limit. And the settlement basis matters: replacement cost versus actual cash value is the difference between buying a new machine and buying a depreciated one.

02The details

What Tampa Bay Trades Actually Haul

Landscaping crews run open trailers with mowers, blowers and trimmers, often leaving them loaded overnight. A single mower is a real claim, and a full trailer is a very large one. Our landscaping and lawn care page covers those accounts.

Roofers and demolition contractors run dump trailers that also create liability exposure while dumping. Plumbers haul jetters and small excavators, electricians carry reels and generators, and pool builders move equipment between sites daily.

Construction activity keeps all of it moving: the Census Bureau counted 8,696 building permits in Hillsborough County, 8,236 in Polk County and 7,878 in Pasco County in 2025. Equipment follows the permits, which is why theft patterns follow new subdivisions in Riverview, Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes.

Hurricane season adds a second question. Trailers and equipment stored outdoors are exposed to wind and flood from June 1 through November 30, and where they sit during a storm is a coverage conversation worth having in May.

03How it works

How We Quote Trailers and Equipment in Tampa

  1. Step 1: Trailer and Equipment Lists

Start with a trailer list: type, length, year, VIN where available, and value. Then an equipment list with make, model, serial number and value for anything significant, plus a blanket amount for small tools.

  2. Step 2: Where Each Item Is Scheduled

We schedule the trailers on the auto policy, place the equipment on inland marine, set deductibles and settlement basis, and confirm how items are secured overnight, because storage affects both price and eligibility.

  3. Step 3: Certificates for Contractors and Rental Yards

Certificates showing equipment coverage are issued when a general contractor or rental yard asks.

Is my trailer covered by my truck's insurance?

Liability while towing generally extends to the trailer, but damage to the trailer itself does not unless the trailer is scheduled on the policy. That distinction catches contractors across Tampa Bay every season, usually when a trailer is stolen rather than wrecked.

How much does trailer insurance cost in Tampa?

Physical damage on a trailer is rated on its value and the deductible, and most utility and equipment trailers add a modest amount to an existing commercial auto policy. Because the figures depend on your trailer list, we quote them per unit rather than publishing a range. A trailer kept behind a fenced shop in Pinellas Park and one left at an open site in Riverview can be rated differently.

Are my tools covered if they are stolen from a locked trailer?

Only if you carry inland marine or contractors equipment coverage. Auto physical damage covers the trailer, not its contents, and general liability covers neither. Tool theft from trailers is one of the most frequent losses in Tampa Bay trades, so the coverage usually pays for itself.

Does equipment coverage apply when the machine is being used, not just transported?

Contractors equipment coverage generally follows the equipment at job sites, in transit and in storage, subject to the policy terms. Equipment being operated is a different question from equipment being hauled, and rented machines need their own attention. We confirm both before a crew starts work in Hillsborough County.

Do I need a separate policy for a rented skid steer?

Usually the rental agreement requires coverage for the rented machine, which can be added by endorsement rather than a new policy. Send the rental agreement and we will match the limits it demands, which keeps a Tampa Bay rental yard from holding up your job.

Where should trailers and equipment go during a hurricane?

Somewhere inland, uphill and, if possible, indoors, and the decision should be made before a storm is named. Comprehensive coverage on a scheduled trailer responds to wind and flood, but the deductible and any named-storm terms apply, and equipment left at a low-lying site near the Alafia River or the Pinellas coast is the hardest to replace quickly after a regional loss.

Can I add a trailer to the policy in the middle of the season?

Yes. Trailers are added by endorsement, usually the same day you send the type, length and value, and most commercial auto policies also include a short automatic coverage window for newly acquired units. Contractors picking up a second dump trailer for a busy Riverview subdivision do this constantly.
