Built for the trucks that keep Tampa Bay moving

Commercial Auto Insurance Tampa: Business Vehicle & Fleet Insurance Quotes in Tampa, FL

Start here

Commercial auto insurance in Tampa, FL protects the trucks, vans, pickups and cars your business depends on, and the business itself when one of them is in an accident. Tampa Bay runs on wheels: contractors cross the Howard Frankland at 6 a.m., route trucks work Brandon to Wesley Chapel by lunch, and box trucks feed Port Tampa Bay, the I-4 corridor and Tampa International Airport all day. Every one of those vehicles needs a policy written for business use, because a personal auto policy is not built to pay a business-use claim.

Commercial Auto Insurance Tampa is a local commercial auto specialist that quotes your vehicles with multiple carriers and builds coverage around how you actually operate: garaging ZIP, radius, vehicle weight, who drives, and what you haul. Florida sets its own liability minimums for heavier commercial vehicles under s. 627.7415, layered on top of the state's $10,000 personal injury protection and $10,000 property damage liability baseline. None of those numbers come close to what a serious Hillsborough County crash costs.

Whether you run one work van out of Pinellas Park, a five-truck roofing crew in Riverview, or a 40-unit delivery fleet out of Lakeland, the quote starts the same way: send your vehicle list and call (813) 544-3977. Same-day quotes, certificates of insurance when your GC or HOA asks for them, and a licensed agent who answers the phone during hurricane season.

  • Independent: the agency behind this site, Brown Insurance and Financial Services, Inc., shops 80+ carriers, including the commercial auto markets listed below.
  • Commercial auto is the specialty, not a side line to homeowners insurance.
  • Coverage built from Florida's actual requirements: s. 627.7415 weight tiers, PIP/PDL baseline, and federal FMCSA filings for DOT-regulated trucks.
  • Same-day quotes when you send VINs, driver list and garaging ZIP before 2 p.m.
  • Certificates of insurance and additional-insured endorsements issued the day you ask, so a missing COI never holds up a job.

  • Driver MVR reviews and fleet safety credits applied wherever a carrier offers them.
  • Trades we write every week: roofers, HVAC, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, pool service, pest control, cleaning and delivery.

02Coverage

Commercial Vehicle Insurance in Tampa: What a Policy Covers

A commercial auto policy is assembled, not bought off a shelf. These are the coverages we quote most often for Tampa Bay businesses, each with its own page explaining how it works and what it costs.

Commercial Auto Liability

Bodily injury and property damage liability is the core of every policy. Most Tampa contractors carry a $1,000,000 combined single limit because that is what general contractors, property managers and municipal contracts ask for on a certificate. We also quote uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which matters in Florida more than in most states because of how many drivers on I-275 carry no bodily injury coverage at all. Read about commercial auto liability.

Collision & Comprehensive (Physical Damage)

Collision repairs your vehicle after an at-fault accident; comprehensive pays for theft, vandalism, falling debris and hail, plus flood and named storms. In Tampa, comprehensive is the coverage that pays when a storm surge floods the yard where your trucks are parked. Deductibles, named-storm terms, and stated-value versus actual-cash-value settlements are where most of the surprises live. Read about collision & comprehensive.

Hired & Non-Owned Auto

If an employee runs to the supply house in their own car and hits someone, your general liability policy does not respond and their personal policy may deny the claim as business use. Hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) closes that gap, and it is usually one of the smallest lines on a commercial policy. Read about hired & non-owned auto.

Fleet Insurance

Once you pass five vehicles, fleet rating, blanket coverage for newly acquired units, telematics discounts and a driver-screening program change both the price and the way the policy is managed. Read about fleet insurance.

Trucks, Vans, Pickups, Trailers & Equipment

Box trucks, dump trucks, cargo vans and three-quarter-ton pickups are rated differently, and trailers, tools and equipment need their own coverage because physical damage on the truck does not follow what it tows. See commercial truck insurance, work van & cargo van insurance, commercial pickup truck insurance and trailer, tools & equipment insurance.

03Carriers

Florida Commercial Insurance Companies We Quote for Tampa Businesses

Brown Insurance and Financial Services writes all lines of insurance through more than 80 carriers. For business vehicles in Tampa Bay, the work goes to a focused list of commercial auto carriers.

Commercial Auto Carriers We Write With

Auto-Owners, Chubb, GEICO, GUARD, Hagerty, Liberty Mutual, Mercury, Nationwide, Progressive and Travelers. Each one has its own appetite for vehicle types and trades, and its own view of driving records, so a roofing fleet, a courier van and a plumbing company's service trucks are matched to the carriers most likely to want them.

Why Quoting More Than One Carrier Matters

Commercial auto pricing and appetite vary from carrier to carrier and change from year to year. Quoting the same account with several of these companies, with the differences explained, is what an independent agency is for, and the agency's wider relationships across more than 80 carriers help when a business wants general liability, property or workers' compensation quoted alongside its vehicles.

04Pricing

How Much Is Commercial Auto Insurance in Tampa?

Premiums are set by vehicle class, gross vehicle weight, radius of operation, liability limits, driver records, garaging ZIP and claims history. Tampa garaging ZIPs rate higher than rural Florida because of traffic density on I-4, I-75 and the Veterans Expressway, and because Hillsborough County recorded 26,269 traffic crashes in 2024, the fourth-highest total of Florida's 67 counties (Florida Traffic Crash Facts Annual Report 2024, FLHSMV). What a Tampa business auto policy costs comes down to those inputs. The table below shows how common accounts compare with each other. The full breakdown by vehicle type and fleet size is on our commercial auto insurance cost page.

Vehicle / account Relative cost What moves it
Hired & non-owned auto only Usually the smallest line Payroll, number of employees driving
One light pickup or cargo van, liability only ($1M CSL) Lower than trucks and fleets Driver MVRs, radius, prior coverage
Same vehicle with collision & comprehensive Above liability only Vehicle value, deductible, named-storm terms
Box truck or dump truck (26,000 lbs and up) Well above light vehicles GVW tier, cargo, DOT filings, driver experience
5-10 vehicle contractor fleet Scales with the fleet; per-unit cost usually falls as it grows Fleet safety program, telematics, loss runs

Every account is quoted individually, so treat the table as a map of relative cost rather than a price list.

05The rules

Florida Commercial Auto Insurance Requirements

Florida has two layers of minimums, and most Tampa businesses fall under the first without realizing the second exists.

Vehicle Minimum required by Florida law Source
Any registered vehicle, including light business vehicles $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) + $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) ss. 627.736, 324.022, Fla. Stat.
Commercial motor vehicle 26,000-34,999 lbs GVW $50,000 combined bodily injury & property damage per occurrence s. 627.7415(1)
Commercial motor vehicle 35,000-43,999 lbs GVW $100,000 combined per occurrence s. 627.7415(2)
Commercial motor vehicle 44,000 lbs GVW and up $300,000 combined per occurrence s. 627.7415(3)
Vehicles regulated by the U.S. DOT (49 C.F.R.) Federal minimums apply: $750,000 for most for-hire interstate freight, higher for hazardous materials s. 627.7415(4); 49 C.F.R. § 387.9

These are floors, not recommendations. A single injury crash on Dale Mabry can exceed $300,000 before the vehicle damage is counted, which is why the practical standard for Tampa contractors is a $1,000,000 combined single limit. The Florida commercial auto insurance page walks through each tier, the USDOT number question for intrastate trucks, and what a certificate of insurance must show.

06Who it's for

Which Tampa Businesses Need Commercial Auto Insurance?

Commercial auto buyers in Tampa reach well past trucking companies. These are the groups that call us most.

A yellow backhoe loader chained onto a black equipment trailer behind a dump truck, stopped on a causeway road beside turquoise water with high-rise towers in the distance.

Contractors and the Building Trades

Roofers, HVAC, plumbers, electricians and general contractors put more vehicles on Tampa roads than any other group, and every one of them gets asked for a certificate before the first day on site. Crew trucks, ladder racks, dump trailers and job-site pickups are all rated as commercial use. See contractors, roofers, HVAC, plumbers and electricians.

Route-Based Services

Landscapers, pool service companies and pest control operators run the same streets on a schedule (Carrollwood, Brandon, Bloomingdale, Palm Harbor), towing trailers and hauling mowers or chemicals. Route work means mileage, and mileage means claims frequency, so these accounts are priced on driver records and route discipline. See landscaping & lawn care, pool service and pest control.

A delivery driver carries a stack of boxes beside a white cargo van with its rear door open.

Delivery, Courier and Last-Mile

Lakeland and east Hillsborough distribution centers have made cargo vans and box trucks a growth class in Tampa Bay, and also one of the hardest to place. Carrier appetite for delivery is narrow; we quote the markets that actually write it. See delivery & courier.

Anyone Using a Car for Work

Realtors, sales reps, mobile groomers, home health and cleaning companies often run on personal vehicles. Some of that can stay on a personal policy with a business-use rating; some cannot. The line is drawn by use, ownership and who else drives. See business car insurance and cleaning & janitorial.

07How it works

How We Build Your Commercial Auto Quote

Commercial auto insurance quotes in Tampa come together in four steps, and the first one does most of the work.

  1. Step 1: Vehicle and Driver List

We start with VINs, gross vehicle weight ratings, garaging ZIP codes and the list of everyone who drives. Weight ratings decide which Florida statutory tier applies; garaging ZIP decides the territory rate; driver records are pulled as motor vehicle reports through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Send this before 2 p.m. and most single-vehicle and small-fleet quotes come back the same business day.

  2. Step 2: Coverage Design

Next we set limits and deductibles around your contracts and your exposure: a $1,000,000 CSL if your GC or HOA requires it, uninsured motorist limits that match, hired and non-owned auto if employees ever drive their own cars, and physical damage terms that spell out named-storm deductibles before hurricane season opens on June 1. Trailers, tools and equipment are scheduled separately so nothing you haul is left uncovered.

  3. Step 3: Market the Account

We submit the account to the commercial auto carriers that fit its class. A roofing fleet, a courier van and a plumbing company's service trucks do not belong with the same carriers. You get the quotes side by side with the differences explained, so the decision rests on more than the lowest number.

  4. Step 4: Bind, Certificates and Filings

Once you choose, we bind coverage, issue certificates of insurance and additional-insured endorsements the same day, and handle USDOT-related filings for trucks that need them. Adding a vehicle, swapping a driver or sending a certificate to a new property manager is one call to (813) 544-3977.

How much is a commercial auto insurance policy in Tampa?

It depends on the vehicles, the drivers and the coverage, and there is no real ceiling for large fleets. A single light pickup or van with $1,000,000 in liability is the least expensive common setup, collision and comprehensive add to it, and box trucks and dump trucks climb because of Florida's weight-based minimums and cargo exposure. Your garaging ZIP inside Hillsborough or Pinellas County is one of the biggest levers, so the same truck garaged in Plant City and in South Tampa will not carry the same premium.

What does commercial auto insurance cover?

Liability for injuries and property damage you cause, personal injury protection and medical payments, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and physical damage to your own vehicles (collision and comprehensive). Endorsements can add hired and non-owned autos, rental reimbursement and towing, along with coverage for equipment and trailers. It does not cover the cargo you haul for hire or your tools unless those are scheduled. That is a common gap for Tampa contractors whose vans hold $20,000 of equipment overnight.

Does my personal auto policy cover my truck if I use it for work?

Usually not once the vehicle is titled to a business, carries a ladder rack or wrap, hauls tools and materials daily, or is driven by employees. Personal policies exclude or restrict business use, and the exclusion tends to surface after the claim. A sole proprietor with one lightly used pickup sometimes qualifies for a business-use rating on a personal policy; anyone with employees driving, a trailer, or a vehicle over 10,000 lbs GVWR should be on a commercial policy. That line gets crossed quickly on Hillsborough and Pinellas County job sites.

What liability limits do Tampa general contractors and HOAs require?

The standard certificate request in Tampa Bay is $1,000,000 combined single limit for auto liability, often with the GC, property owner or HOA named as additional insured and a waiver of subrogation. Municipal and Port Tampa Bay contracts can require more. We issue the certificate the day it is requested, whether the job is in Westshore or out on Big Bend Road.

Does hurricane season change my commercial auto coverage?

Comprehensive coverage is what pays for flood and wind damage to your vehicles, and some carriers apply separate named-storm deductibles or restrict binding once a storm is named in the Gulf. Coverage in place before June 1 is coverage you can count on; trying to add physical damage with a hurricane watch posted for Tampa Bay usually is not possible.

Do I need a USDOT number for my trucks in Florida?

Trucks that cross state lines with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 lbs need a USDOT number and must meet federal minimum financial responsibility under 49 C.F.R. Part 387. Florida applies the federal safety regulations in 49 C.F.R. parts 382 to 386 and 390 to 397 to intrastate commercial motor vehicles under s. 316.302, Fla. Stat., and FMCSA lists Florida among the states that require intrastate commercial motor vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT number, with lighter vehicles under 26,001 pounds exempt from much of it. We confirm what applies to each truck before quoting, whether it runs I-4 daily or never leaves Hillsborough County.

How fast can coverage be bound?

Most single-vehicle and small-fleet accounts can be quoted and bound the same business day when we have VINs, driver licenses, garaging address and prior carrier information. Larger fleets and DOT-regulated trucks take longer because of loss runs and filings. If a Tampa Bay job site needs a certificate tomorrow morning, call today rather than in the morning.

Which areas do you serve?

All four Tampa Bay counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk. That includes Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Wesley Chapel and Lakeland. Our agents are licensed in all 50 states, so vehicles garaged anywhere in Florida can be covered, though most of the book sits inside those four Tampa Bay counties.
